All-in-one high resolution multispectral & RGB mapping

The Agrowing’s A7RivQuad sensor is based on a modified Sony A7Riv full-spectrum camera body, equipped with Agrowing 10 narrow spectral band multispectral lens. The sensor won the Innovative Product Press Award at the Commercial UAV Americas in November 2019.

The AI-enabling sensor provides the best of its class NDVI imagery. It acquires 10 narrow 24nm to 30nm wide bands of 12MP per band! Based on a single mount, single sensor, a mechanical shutter, and Sony’s BSI CMOS sensor of extreme dynamic range, Agrowing’s patented multispectral sensor overcomes multispectral acquisition typical issues of synchronization and chroma aberration. It also allows acquiring multispectral imagery manually from as close as 3m distance with a resolution of sub 0.5mm per pixel.

The integrated solution comes with 2 interchangeable lenses for 12 megapixel multispectral mapping, and 61 megapixel RGB mapping. Combined with the long endurance VTOL platform, this enables high resolution multispectral mapping at a large scale. Covering up to 800ha/2000ac with a multispectral resolution of 5 CM per pixel, or 166ha/410ac with a multispectral resolution of 1.1 CM per pixel.

Plant health with the Micasense RedEdge or Altum

  1. Chlorophyll Map: The red edge spectral band is the star here, working in conjunction with the other bands to provide a more accurate measure of not just plant vigor but plant health.
  2. NDVI Layer: This commonly known index compares the reflectance of the red band with that of the near-infrared band. However, this index alone provides limited information.
  3. Digital Surface Model: A DSM is an astonishingly advantageous tool in any agronomist’s arsenal, primarily because of its use in evaluating surface properties and water flow.
  4. RGB Image: RedEdge-MX features global shutters for distortion-free images, including narrowband red, green, and blue bands for RGB color images that when processed are aligned to all visible and non-visible bands and vegetation indices.

DeltaQuad PRO makes 3D model of UNESCO World Heritage Site Uruk

 

The DeltaQuad was involved with an archaeological project where the mission was to present a large-scale and detailed 3D model of the ancient city of Uruk – a famous archaeological site and since 2016 recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The investigations, led by a team of Archaeologists from the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, were aimed at answering questions about the interaction between the urban center of Uruk and its urban environment. Specifically:

  • How were urban spaces produced and maintained ?
  • Where was the outer limit of the city during different periods and what was the difference between inside and outside?
  • How did environmental change (natural as well as social changes) affect the development of the urban center and its suburbs ?

The team was able to answer a number of these questions by combining aerial and ground survey. They succeeded in their mission and mention that this project has only been possible due to the advancement of UAV technology and 3D software.

Technical details of the mission:

  • The 3D model covers the city and the surroundings amounting to a total surface of 40km2.
  • The Survey mission was conducted at a height of 260M above sea level.
  • Each flight was planned to cover approximately 75km which took around 1h 15min.
  • During each flight 1200 images were taken covering 1.5km2 with 70% overlap and cross-flight.
  • Overall 30,000 images were captured using the light-weight and full-frame camera Sony RX1R2. The ground resolution of the images comes down to 3cm per pixel.
  • Cloudy and late-day images were adapted to the exposure of sunny day-light images and developed into high- quality Jpegs for import to 3D photogrammetry software.
